How PDRO Kenya is Changing Mental Health Advocacy in the Global South

In Kenya and across the Global South, conversations about mental health have often been muted by stigma, misunderstanding, and a lack of inclusive platforms for those most affected. At PDRO Kenya, we are changing that narrative by placing people with lived experience at the center of advocacy, research, and service design.

Our approach is simple yet powerful: transform personal stories into tools for change. Through our Living Proof Advocacy model, we train individuals to share their lived experiences in ways that inspire empathy, influence policy, and ignite community action. This is more than storytelling — it’s systems change through human connection.

But our work doesn’t stop at storytelling. We are:

Building peer-led support networks that offer safe spaces for recovery, resilience, and mutual care.

Equipping communities with knowledge and tools for early prevention, stress management, and mental health literacy.

Integrating WHO QualityRights principles into mental health services, ensuring dignity, equality, and rights-based care.

The results speak for themselves:

2,467 youth reached with mental health awareness and coping strategies.

84 lay counselors trained to provide community-based mental health support.

10,000 trees planted as part of climate-resilient, nature-based therapy initiatives.

At PDRO Kenya, we believe that lived experience is expertise — and when those voices lead, the transformation is lasting. By combining advocacy, education, and rights-based practice, we are not just addressing mental health challenges; we are redefining how communities understand and respond to them.

The Global South doesn’t just need mental health solutions; it needs mental health movements. And together, we are building one.
